WHAT IS SNAP

Understanding
Food Assistance Program.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is a federal nutrition assistance program that helps eligible individuals and families pay for groceries. In Illinois, benefits are administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and provided through the Illinois Link Card, an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that functions like a debit card at participating stores.

Use SNAP to buy most everyday groceries, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread, cereals, frozen and canned foods, as well as seeds and plants that produce food at home.

You cannot use SNAP to buy alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, medicines, household supplies, personal care products, pet food, or most hot prepared meals.

WHO MAY QUALIFY

Could Your Family
Be Eligible?

Every household is different. SNAP eligibility depends on factors such as household size, income, certain allowable expenses, and other program requirements. Even if you’re unsure whether you qualify, it may still be worth applying. Many people are surprised to learn they may be eligible for assistance.

Your situation may be different, but these are some common examples:

›You recently lost your job.

›Your work hours were reduced.

›Your household income has decreased.

›You’re working but still struggling to afford everyday groceries.

›You’re supporting children on a limited income.

›You’re an older adult living on a fixed income.

›You have a disability.

SNAP FAQ

Common Questions About
The Food Assistance Program.

Can I qualify for SNAP if I have a job?

Yes. Having a job does not automatically disqualify you from SNAP. Many working individuals and families qualify because eligibility depends on several factors, including household size, income, and certain allowable expenses.

How much can I earn and still qualify?

There isn’t one income limit that applies to everyone. Eligibility depends on your household size, income, and other factors. Because every situation is different, it’s often worth checking even if you’re unsure.

How long does it take to receive SNAP benefits?

Most SNAP applications are processed within about 30 days. Some households with very limited income and resources may qualify for expedited processing. If additional information is needed, IDHS will contact you before making a decision.

What if I don't have all my documents?

Don’t let missing paperwork stop you from getting started. Depending on your situation, additional information may be requested during the application process. We help you understand what may be needed before you apply.

What if my application is denied?

A denial doesn’t always mean you’re permanently ineligible. You’ll receive a notice explaining the reason for the decision. In some cases, providing additional information or correcting missing details may help resolve the issue.

Can Untangle tell me if I'll qualify?

No. Final eligibility decisions are made by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). While we can’t determine eligibility, we can help you understand the process and submit the strongest application possible based on your situation.
